Why Birmingham AV includes a 12 month warranty when others do not
Most refurbished PC sellers offer 30 or 90 days because that is roughly when infant mortality tails off. Twelve months is the honest floor once you know what actually fails.

Walk any refurbished PC listing on eBay UK and the same warranty numbers repeat: 30 days, 60 days, sometimes 90 days on a "premium" tier. Birmingham AV ships every refurbished machine, from a £129 ThinkCentre M710q to a £849 Precision 3660 workstation, with a full twelve month back to base warranty at no extra cost. That is not a marketing decision. It is what the failure data forces onto any refurbisher honest about how used business hardware breaks.
The bathtub curve, and why 90 days is a con
Electronic components fail on a well documented curve: a spike in the first few weeks (infant mortality: a bad solder joint, a marginal capacitor, a fan bearing that was noisy off the corporate lease), then a long flat plateau, then wear out failures start climbing past the five or six year mark on capacitors and drives.
A 30 or 90 day warranty covers the infant mortality spike and almost nothing else. If a Dell OptiPlex 7060 was going to die of a bulging capacitor, it was going to do it in the first fortnight of power cycling. The seller offering 90 days is not being generous. They are covering the window where their own QC failures would show up, then handing the rest of the risk to you.
Twelve months is different. It covers the plateau. It says the seller is confident that a unit which survived three months will keep running for the year, and if not, they will fix or replace it.
What actually fails on used business PCs
Across roughly 87,000 units sold since 2017, the failure modes on refurbished small form factor and micro business PCs cluster into a short list.
Storage is the biggest. A Samsung PM871 or Kingston OEM SSD that has run as the C drive of an accountant's workstation for four years has burned through a meaningful fraction of its rated program erase cycles. Even when SMART data looks clean, wear levelling counters do not lie. Every Birmingham AV refurbished PC therefore ships with a new SSD (typically a Crucial BX500 or WD Blue SN580, sized 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB depending on the listing), not the drive from the corporate fleet.
PSU capacitors are second. On Dell and HP small form factor machines from the OptiPlex 3060 through 7080 era, the internal 200W to 260W PSU is a known ageing part. Bulged caps show up as random reboots under load, six to nine months after redeployment.
Fans are third. The 40mm and 60mm CPU fans on micro chassis (M710q, M720q, M910q, EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini) develop bearing noise before they seize. Motherboards and CPUs, by contrast, almost never fail in year one.
What Birmingham AV covers
The twelve month warranty is back to base and covers any hardware fault that is not the result of physical damage, liquid ingress, or unauthorised internal modification:
- Motherboard, CPU, RAM, chipset, integrated graphics
- The new SSD fitted at refurbishment (data recovery attempted where possible)
- PSU, fans, front panel IO, internal cabling
- Discrete GPU where fitted (Quadro P620, T400, and similar on workstation listings)
- Power button, USB ports, network port, video outputs
Consumables and cosmetic wear are excluded, as is user installed software. Windows 11 Pro activation, tied to the motherboard by digital licence, is covered for the life of the machine.
The full range, from entry level i5 micro units through Xeon workstations with discrete GPUs, is on the Midlands AV eBay storefront. Warranty terms are identical across every listing regardless of price.
The economics: why 12 months is the honest floor
A real twelve month warranty is not expensive if you refurbish properly. Across several thousand units shipped per quarter, the year one return rate on properly refurbished business PCs sits between 1.8% and 2.6%. Call it 2.5%.
If the average unit sells for £280 and the average warranty return costs £45 to service (courier both ways £14, an hour of bench time £25, a replacement part £15 mean), the warranty provision per unit is £45 multiplied by 0.025, which is £1.13. Round to two pounds for margin.
Two pounds. That is the cost of a twelve month warranty on a properly refurbished PC. Sellers offering 30 or 90 days are hedging against their own refurbishment quality being poor enough that year one returns would run into double digits.
What good refurbishment actually looks like
The maths above only works because the refurbishment is not cosmetic. Every unit that leaves Birmingham AV goes through the same fixed process: full disassembly, compressed air and isopropyl clean, thermal paste replacement (Arctic MX-4 or equivalent), new SSD, RAM tested with MemTest86 for one full pass, PSU load tested where accessible, 24 hour burn in on Prime95 and FurMark, then a clean Windows 11 Pro install with current drivers and firmware. Anything that fails a stage gets stripped for parts, not relisted with a shorter warranty.
FAQ
Does the warranty cover the operating system?
The Windows 11 Pro digital licence is tied to the motherboard and remains valid for the life of the machine. Software issues (drivers, updates, user installed applications) are supported by best effort remote guidance for the first year, but are not a warranty claim in the same sense as hardware.
What happens if a fault develops in month eleven?
Same process as month one. Contact support with the eBay order number, receive a prepaid courier label, the unit is diagnosed within two working days of arrival, and it is either repaired or replaced with an equivalent or better specification. No depreciation clause, no partial refund fudge.
Is the warranty transferable if I sell the PC on?
Yes. The warranty is attached to the unit by service tag or serial number, not to the original buyer. This matters for small businesses that redeploy hardware between staff or resell after upgrades.
Do workstations with discrete GPUs have the same cover?
Yes. Precision 3620, 3630, 3660, and HP Z2 workstations with Quadro P620, T400, T600, or RTX A2000 cards ship with the same twelve month warranty covering the GPU alongside the rest of the hardware. Gaming use is not excluded.
