Path tracing has moved from headline feature into a real buying criterion. In 2026, three flagship titles ship with fully path traced modes that treat every light bounce as a simulated ray, and each one punishes a mid range GPU in ways traditional ray tracing never did. If you want Cyberpunk 2077 Overdrive, Alan Wake 2 with Full Ray Tracing, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle at playable frame rates, the hardware bar is now genuinely high.

What path tracing actually costs you

Traditional ray tracing bolts a few effects onto a rasterised frame: reflections here, a shadow there, maybe some ambient occlusion. Path tracing throws the rasteriser out and simulates every ray of light bouncing through the scene. The result looks like offline CGI. The cost is that GPU workload roughly triples versus standard RT, and denoising becomes as important as raw ray throughput.
