The ThinkPad line has been running for over thirty years, and the refurbished market has never been kinder to buyers. Corporate fleet returns and three year lease cycles mean tens of thousands of quality machines land on the UK secondary market every month. The trick is knowing which models still hold up in 2026.

Three families stand out. The T480, the T14 (Gen 1 through Gen 3), and the X1 Carbon (Gen 6 through Gen 9). Each has a sweet spot on price.

Why ThinkPads survive the second hand market

A ThinkPad is designed to be opened, serviced, upgraded and passed on. Hardware maintenance manuals are public, third party parts are widely stocked, and a technician can strip and rebuild a T series in under an hour.

The X1 Carbon: the premium buy

The X1 Carbon is where ThinkPad meets ultrabook. Carbon fibre lid, magnesium base, and a target weight under 1.13 kilograms across every generation from Gen 6 (2018) forwards. The Gen 7, Gen 8 and Gen 9 are the sweet spot on the refurb market.

The Gen 6 is the one to think twice about. Some early units suffered from thermal throttling on the i7-8650U. The Gen 7 fixed the chassis, the Gen 8 moved to 10th generation Intel, and the Gen 9 brought the taller 16:10 display panel that transforms the machine for document or code work.

Screen options matter. The 1080p matte IPS is the mainstream choice, the 1440p and 4K panels hit battery life, and the WQUXGA OLED on later units is the connoisseur pick. Keyboard, TrackPoint, serviceability

Even the slim ThinkPad keyboards, with 1.5mm of travel, retain the curved keycaps, deliberate spacing and tactile bump that make sustained typing comfortable. No other business laptop line has held the line on this.

Is Windows 11 supported on the T480?

Officially no, because the 8th generation Intel processors are not on Microsoft's supported CPU list. In practice, the machine has TPM 2.0 and runs Windows 11 fine with the registry bypass. Most refurbishers ship the T480 with Windows 10 or Linux to avoid the ambiguity.

How long do refurbished ThinkPad batteries last?
