Building a quiet PC under 25 decibels in 2026
A near silent desktop is a matter of engineering, not luck. Here is the specification path that lands reliably under 25 dBA at the ear.
Twenty five decibels is roughly the sound of a quiet library. Most stock desktops sit closer to 38 or 42 dBA under load, which is why they nag at the edge of concentration all day. Library quiet is not about buying the most expensive parts. It is about picking the right ones, sizing them generously, and refusing to let one component bottleneck the thermals.
Why 25 dBA is the right target
Below 30 dBA a PC stops being something you notice and starts being part of the room. Below 25 dBA it disappears entirely, even in a quiet bedroom at 2am. Push lower than 22 dBA and you enter diminishing returns: the fans have to spin so slowly that thermal margins shrink, and any dust build up over twelve months will push the machine back above target.
25 dBA is the sweet spot. Achievable on air, sustainable across a three year service life, and low enough that background music masks it completely.
Start with the case, not the CPU
The single biggest silence decision is the chassis. A closed panel case with dense acoustic foam on the side, top, and front panels will knock roughly 4 to 6 dBA off any given fan curve compared to a mesh case running identical hardware. Fractal Design Define 7, be quiet! Silent Base 802, and Nanoxia Deep Silence 4 are all defensible picks in the £140 to £200 range.
The trade off is straightforward. A sealed case runs 3 to 5 degrees warmer at the same fan RPM, so the rest of the build has to overcompensate on cooling capacity. Do not try to silence a mesh case with quieter fans. It is a fight you lose.
Noctua NH-D15 or nothing
For CPU cooling under 25 dBA the shortlist is short: Noctua NH-D15 G2, Thermalright Peerless Assassin 140, and be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5. All three are dual tower designs with 140mm fans that dissipate 200W of package power at fan speeds under 900 RPM.
Oversized air beats a 280mm AIO for silence because of pump noise. Even the best AIOs emit a 25 to 30 dBA whine that no fan curve can hide. Run the CPU fans at 600 to 800 RPM and they contribute almost nothing to the noise budget. Then undervolt the CPU by 60 to 100 millivolts. On a Ryzen 7 9700X or Core Ultra 7 265K, a modest undervolt cuts 15 to 25W off sustained load with no measurable performance loss.
The GPU is the loudest part of your PC
Every silent build lives or dies by the graphics card. Stock RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti coolers idle at 32 to 34 dBA and hit 40 dBA plus under gaming load. Non starter.
Three levers, in order of impact:
- Pick a triple slot, triple fan card. MSI Ventus 3X, ASUS TUF, and Gigabyte Gaming OC variants use larger heatsinks that let the fans spin slower for the same thermal target.
- Undervolt aggressively. A 5070 Ti held at 0.900V instead of the stock 1.050V loses roughly 4 to 6 percent frames per second and drops 60 to 80W of heat output.
- Set a custom fan curve with zero RPM below 55 degrees. On a well cased build, an undervolted 5070 Ti stays under 60 degrees during productivity work and only spins up under gaming load.
To remove the GPU from the noise budget entirely, drop to an RTX 5060 or Intel Arc B580. Both run passively or near passively and handle 1440p productivity workloads without complaint.

Case fans, PSU, and the boring bits
Three Noctua NF-A14 chromax fans, two intake at the front, one exhaust at the rear, on a PWM curve capped at 700 RPM under normal load. The A14 hits its acoustic floor around 400 RPM and stays there for anything short of a heatwave. Skip the top exhaust fan: convection handles residual heat rise in a sealed case, and the top position amplifies bearing whine.
For the power supply, pick a fanless or semi passive unit in the 750 to 850W range. Seasonic Prime PX Fanless, be quiet! Dark Power Pro 13, and Corsair RM850x Shift all qualify. Semi passive means the PSU fan does not spin below 40 percent load, which for a properly specified build is more or less always.
Storage, RAM, and the last few decibels
NVMe only. No spinning drives. A single 2TB Samsung 990 Pro or WD SN850X handles OS, applications, and working files with room to spare. RAM does not make noise, but populate all four slots with matched DIMMs rather than two sticks at higher clocks. Lower voltage across four modules runs cooler. A well built machine at this point measures 22 to 24 dBA at one metre during productivity work, 25 to 27 dBA during gaming. Target hit.
FAQ
Can a build go below 20 dBA without water cooling?
Not while retaining a modern gaming grade GPU. Sub 20 dBA builds require fully passive cases like the Streacom DB4 or MonsterLabo The First, which cap out at roughly 150W total system TDP. That excludes any dedicated GPU worth mentioning in 2026.
Does the CPU need repasting on a new build?
Not on a new build. Noctua and Thermalright ship with excellent factory paste good for three to five years. Repasting becomes worthwhile at year three or four, with Kryonaut Extreme or PTM7950 as the go to choices for that refresh.
How much extra does a silence tuned build cost?

Does undervolting void a warranty?
No. Undervolting through the BIOS or GPU driver is a supported configuration change on all current AMD, Intel, and Nvidia hardware. Physical modification of the cooler or delidding the CPU does void warranty on retail parts.
