The Birmingham AV 24 hour burn in: what it catches
Roughly one in 300 refurbished PCs passes a cold bench test then fails under sustained load. Here is what a full day of burn in surfaces.

A cold bench test tells you very little about a refurbished PC. Power on, POST, Windows loads, a five minute Cinebench run. Ship it. That is how most volume refurbishers operate. It is also why buyers occasionally end up with a machine that reboots itself at 3pm on a Tuesday for reasons nobody can pin down.
The Birmingham AV bench does something different. Every unit sits on soak for a full 24 hours under mixed load before it goes near a courier box. Roughly one in 300 machines fails during that window. Those are the returns nobody wants three weeks after purchase.
What the 24 hour cycle does
The soak is a rotation. The first four hours run Prime95 small FFTs on the CPU, pushing package temperatures to their sustained limit and exposing any weakness in the VRM or thermal interface. Hours four to eight run FurMark on the GPU where fitted, or an equivalent iGPU shader load on integrated parts. Hours eight to sixteen run memtest86 across all DIMMs. The final eight hours combine a HeavyLoad CPU and GPU stressor with continuous SSD read and write cycles at roughly 40 percent of the drive's rated endurance per hour.
Ambient in the soak room sits at 24 to 26 degrees Celsius, deliberately warmer than a domestic office. If a machine survives that envelope for a day, it will survive a customer's desk in July.
The one in 300: what actually fails
The bench log shows failure modes clustered into four categories. None of them show up on a five minute test.
The most common is thermal throttling under sustained CPU load. A Dell OptiPlex 7060 SFF with an i7 8700 will pass POST and a Cinebench R23 pass. Put it under Prime95 for two hours and the package climbs to 98 degrees, core clock drops from 4.3 GHz to 2.9 GHz, and the fan pins to 100 percent. The culprit is almost always dried out thermal paste from the original 2018 build. Repaste, reseat, retest. Now it holds 4.1 GHz all core at 84 degrees.
The second is intermittent memory errors that only appear after DIMMs have been warm for hours. A HP EliteDesk 800 G4 with 32GB of Samsung DDR4 2666 will run four passes of memtest86 clean from cold. Start the test at hour twelve of soak and you get a single bit error at 0x1A4F8C0. That module is on its way out.
The third is PSU rail sag under combined CPU and GPU load. Older Lenovo ThinkCentre M910 units with the 210W internal PSU run either load at full tilt happily. Run both together and the 12V rail sags to 11.4 volts. The GPU driver quietly resets. On a customer machine that shows up as random display flickers during video calls.
The fourth is storage. A used Samsung PM883 480GB enterprise SSD will report clean SMART data on arrival. Push 3TB of writes through it during the final soak window and you occasionally see the reallocated sector count tick up. That drive does not ship.

Why five minute testing misses this
Most refurbisher QA is built around throughput. A bench operator has fifteen minutes per unit to hit target: boot, run a stress test for four minutes, check SMART, run a display test, and box.
Every failure mode above has a time signature. Thermal paste degradation shows up after 40 to 60 minutes of load. Marginal memory shows up after DIMMs have been warm for several hours. PSU rail sag only appears when both major loads are active at once. Drive endurance issues need actual write volume. Compressing QA below the timescale where these faults appear moves them from the workshop to the customer.
What the buyer sees

The soak room, briefly

Nothing about that process is glamorous. It is a shelf full of PCs making noise for a day. It is also the only reliable way to find the faults that hurt customers.

How long has Birmingham AV run 24 hour burn in
The full cycle has been standard on every desktop shipped since Q2 2023. Before that the soak was 8 hours, which caught thermal issues but missed slower memory and endurance faults. The move dropped the return rate from 1.6 percent to under 1 percent.
Does burn in apply to laptops as well
Laptops run a modified 12 hour cycle because their thermal design is not built for continuous full load. The laptop soak covers CPU, GPU, display, battery discharge and recharge cycles, and hinge stress. Battery health is verified against a minimum 80 percent design capacity.
What happens to units that fail burn in
They go back to the bench for diagnosis. If the fault is a consumable part like paste, a DIMM, or a PSU, the part is swapped and the unit re-enters soak from hour zero. If the fault is on the board itself, the chassis is stripped for parts.
Is burn in the same as stress testing
Stress testing is a component of burn in, but burn in is longer and covers more subsystems in rotation. A stress test proves a machine survives a peak load briefly. Burn in proves it survives that load across a full working day.
