Best PC for Space Marine 2 and modern Warhammer 40K titles

Space Marine 2 punishes weak CPUs during Tyranid swarms and hammers VRAM with its high resolution texture packs. Here is the build that handles both without stuttering.

Best PC for Space Marine 2 and modern Warhammer 40K titles

Warhammer 40K games have changed shape. The current wave (Space Marine 2, Rogue Trader, Darktide with the high resolution texture pack) asks a lot more from both processor and graphics card than the older Dawn of War titles ever did. If you want a rig that runs Space Marine 2 at 1440p with stable frame times during the big Tyranid horde encounters, and still has headroom for Darktide raids at 1440p Extreme, this is the machine to look at.

Why Space Marine 2 is a CPU problem, not just a GPU one

The set piece moments in Space Marine 2 render thousands of Tyranids on screen at once, each with its own animation and pathing logic. That workload is CPU bound. Reviewers repeatedly noted frame time spikes on older six core chips during Operations mode swarm waves, even when the GPU had plenty of headroom left. Saber Interactive's Swarm engine leans on strong single thread performance and at least eight physical cores to keep 1% lows civilised.

Bolting an RTX card onto an ageing Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel i5 9400F does not fix the stutter. The Ryzen 7 5800X, with eight Zen 3 cores at up to 4.7GHz boost, sits in a sweet spot. It handles the Tyranid swarms without the frame time collapse you see on older six core parts, and it is still affordable on the refurbished market.

VRAM is the other bottleneck

Modern 40K titles ship with optional high resolution texture packs. Darktide's HD pack alone can push VRAM past 10GB at 1440p. Space Marine 2 at 4K Ultra with texture streaming set high uses 11 to 12GB in heavy scenes. Rogue Trader is lighter but still benefits from 8GB plus.

8GB cards are the new minimum, not the comfortable middle. For a Warhammer focused build in 2026, do not settle for less than 10GB of VRAM if you plan to keep the machine three or four years.

The BAV Ryzen 7 5800X build

Our current Ryzen 7 5800X gaming tower is built around this brief. Depending on the specific listing variation you pick, the configuration lands as follows.

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 8 cores, 16 threads, up to 4.7GHz boost
  • Cooler: 240mm AIO liquid cooler on the higher trims, tower air cooler on the base trim
  • Motherboard: B550 chipset, full ATX
  • RAM: 16GB or 32GB DDR4 3200MHz dual channel
  • GPU: RTX 3070 8GB, RTX 3080 10GB, or RTX 4070 12GB depending on variation
  • Storage: 1TB or 2TB NVMe SSD
  • PSU: 750W 80 Plus Gold, fully modular
  • Case: tempered glass mid tower with ARGB front intake
  • OS: Windows 11 Pro, activated

The RTX 3080 10GB variant is the pick for most Space Marine 2 buyers. It handles 1440p Ultra at 90 to 110fps in Operations mode with DLSS Quality, and stays above 60fps in the worst horde scenes. Step up to the RTX 4070 variant for native 1440p Ultra without DLSS, or if you plan to move to 4K later.

Real settings we would run

For Space Marine 2 at 1440p on the RTX 3080 trim, the settings that produced the cleanest frame times in our testing were: preset Ultra, texture pool High (not Ultra, to keep VRAM headroom during Operations spawns), shadows High, DLSS Quality, motion blur off. That combination held 90fps plus during Campaign and stayed above 65fps in the heaviest Operations waves.

For Darktide at 1440p with the HD texture pack, run Extreme with DLSS Balanced and expect 80 to 100fps in most maps, dropping into the 60s during busy boss events. Rogue Trader runs above 100fps at 1440p Ultra with no upscaling needed.

What we would not recommend for this workload

Older Intel builds with the i7 8700 or i7 9700K plus a used RTX 2070 will play Space Marine 2, but the 1% lows during swarm combat are visibly worse and the 8GB VRAM ceiling gets uncomfortable with the texture pack enabled. On a tight budget, waiting a month and stepping up beats living with the stutter for two years.

Equally, do not overspend on a Ryzen 9 7950X3D. Space Marine 2 does not scale past eight fast cores in a way that justifies the price gap over a 5800X.

FAQ

Will a Ryzen 7 5800X be enough for Space Marine 2 in two years?

Yes, comfortably. The 5800X still benchmarks within 10 to 15% of mid range chips like the Ryzen 7 7700 in gaming workloads. You will be GPU limited long before the CPU becomes the weak link.

Do I need 32GB of RAM or is 16GB fine?

16GB is playable but tight. Space Marine 2 Operations mode combined with a browser and Discord open can push system memory past 15GB, which triggers pagefile activity and stutter. For a build you plan to keep for three years, 32GB is the sensible spec and worth the modest uplift.

Is the RTX 3070 8GB variant a bad choice for Warhammer titles?

Not bad, but compromised. It will run Space Marine 2 at 1440p High with DLSS Quality at 70 to 90fps, which is fine. What you lose is the ability to enable the top texture settings in Darktide and Space Marine 2 without VRAM spillover. If you are on a strict budget it is defensible, but the 3080 10GB trim is the better long term buy.

Can this build handle 4K in the newer 40K titles?

The RTX 4070 variant will do 4K Ultra with DLSS Quality at 55 to 70fps in Space Marine 2, which is playable on a 4K TV or monitor. The 3080 trim can do 4K but you will be leaning on DLSS Performance in the heaviest scenes. For a pure 4K buyer we would step up to our 4070 Ti or 4080 builds instead.
