PCVR in 2026 is a bandwidth problem before it is a GPU problem. Here is how to spec a machine that keeps up with Quest 3, Deckard and Beyond without wasting money.

PCVR shifted quietly in the last eighteen months. Headsets pushed resolution and refresh rate hard, but the bottleneck moved to the link between PC and goggles. A Quest 3 on Air Link at 200 Mbps behaves very differently to a Bigscreen Beyond plugged into DisplayPort 1.4, and both punish a mid range GPU in different ways.
This piece looks at the three headsets people are asking about most: Meta Quest 3, Valve Deckard, and Bigscreen Beyond. What each one demands from the host PC, and why the RTX 5070 Ti has become the sweet spot for serious PCVR at home.
The bandwidth problem nobody warned you about
A modern PCVR headset renders roughly two 2K panels at 90 to 120 frames a second. Uncompressed, that is well over 20 Gbps per eye. Nothing sends that raw, so every headset compresses. The trade off is where compression happens and how much latency it adds.
Quest 3 over Air Link tops out around 200 Mbps on Wi Fi 6E, sometimes 500 Mbps on Wi Fi 7 hardware, all spent on H.265 or AV1 video. Bigscreen Beyond avoids the wireless problem entirely with a tethered DisplayPort connection. Valve Deckard, based on the public patents and leaked developer kits, sits between the two: a wireless first design with a proprietary streaming stack and an optional wired mode.
Quest 3: cheap headset, expensive network
Quest 3 is still the volume seller in 2026 because it is a competent standalone unit that also happens to do PCVR. Air Link and Virtual Desktop both live or die on the local network.
A Wi Fi 6E router in the same room as the headset, on a clean 6 GHz channel, will hold 200 Mbps H.265 or 500 Mbps AV1 without visible artefacts. Anything less and you get pumping bitrate and macro blocking. On the PC side, that means a GPU with hardware AV1 encode (RTX 40 series or newer, Radeon RX 7000 series or newer), and a wired ethernet connection to the router. Wireless PC to router is the number one cause of Quest 3 PCVR complaints, fixable for the price of a Cat 6 cable.
Valve Deckard: the wildcard
Deckard has not launched yet, but developer documentation and recent SteamVR beta notes give a clear picture of what Valve is targeting. Expect dual 2160 by 2160 panels at 120 Hz, inside out tracking, and a wireless streaming stack alongside a wired dock. Valve is aiming Deckard at people who bounced off Index because of the base stations.
If Deckard lands where the leaks suggest, minimum spec will be an RTX 4070 or RX 7800 XT class GPU with 12 GB of VRAM, and recommended will step up to an RTX 5070 Ti or better with 16 GB. That is the same silicon Quest 3 users are already buying for AV1 encode, which is not a coincidence.
Bigscreen Beyond: the purest PCVR headset
Beyond is the odd one out. Tiny, tethered, and no standalone mode. The panels are 2560 by 2560 per eye OLED at 90 Hz, driven directly over DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression. No wireless codec, no local network, no Wi Fi router in the loop.
That sounds simple, and for the network it is, but it moves the entire load onto the GPU. Beyond at native resolution with any modern flight sim, MSFS 2024 or DCS World, will happily saturate an RTX 4090. For most people the answer is 90 to 95 per cent render scale with dynamic foveated rendering enabled, which is where 5070 Ti class hardware starts to make sense as a mainstream option.

The 5070 Ti sits at the point where PCVR stops being a compromise. Sixteen gigabytes of GDDR7, hardware AV1 encode and decode, DisplayPort 2.1 with UHBR20, and enough raster performance to run Beyond at near native resolution in most titles. Roughly 25 per cent faster than a 4070 Ti Super in mixed VR workloads, and it draws about 300 W, which keeps PSU requirements sensible at 750 W.
Paired with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or a Core Ultra 7 265K, 32 GB of DDR5 6000, and a decent Wi Fi 7 card for Quest 3 users, that build handles every headset in this article. It is also the build most likely to survive the Deckard launch without a GPU upgrade.
Sensible spec, sensible money
The RTX 5090 exists, and for hardcore MSFS 2024 and DCS pilots it is the correct answer. For everyone else, a 5070 Ti build in the £1,500 to £1,800 range delivers 90 per cent of the experience for roughly half the money. Spend the difference on a Wi Fi 6E or Wi Fi 7 access point and a comfortable head strap.
