Best PC for Baldurs Gate 3 in 2026
Act 3 is where Baldurs Gate 3 punishes weak hardware. Here is the sensible 2026 build that clears it without spending Karlach money.

Baldurs Gate 3 launched in 2023, but it still tops "most played" charts in 2026. Larian keep patching, mod authors keep publishing, and every new player eventually reaches the same wall: Act 3, Lower City, framerate in the low 40s on a machine that ran Act 1 at a locked 90fps. This guide sets out what actually matters when you are choosing a PC for BG3 in 2026, and where the sensible spend sits.
Why Act 3 melts otherwise good rigs
The Act 3 problem is not a GPU problem, at least not primarily. Baldurs Gate 3 uses a heavily instanced CRPG engine with dense NPC crowds, layered scripting, and thousands of persistent world states following you across chapters. In Baldurs Gate itself, the CPU is asked to track hundreds of concurrent AI packages, faction states, item positions and dialogue triggers per frame. That is a single thread bottleneck problem more than a raster problem.
If you are running a six core CPU from the Ryzen 3600 or 10400 era, Act 3 will drop you into the 30s no matter what GPU you bolt on. A modern eight core chip (Ryzen 5 7600 and up, or Core i5 13400 and up) is the actual fix. Anyone selling you a "BG3 build" that skimps on the CPU has misread the game.
VRAM: 8GB is now the floor, not the target
The second issue is texture memory. With the "High" preset, Ultra shadows and DLSS Quality at 1440p, Baldurs Gate 3 sits around 7.2GB to 7.8GB of VRAM in Act 3 cutscenes. On an 8GB card that leaves no headroom for background Discord, a browser, or the inevitable modded outfit pack. You will see texture pop, hitching, and shader compilation stutters.
For 2026, the honest floor is 8GB and the comfortable target is 12GB. That maps neatly onto two cards:
- RTX 4060 8GB: minimum viable, 1080p High, DLSS Quality, locked 60fps
- RTX 4070 12GB: comfortable, 1440p High, DLSS Quality, 90 to 110fps
The 4070 Super and 4070 Ti Super are also fine choices if the price is right, but the plain 4070 remains the value pick for BG3 specifically because the game is not raytracing heavy. You are paying for VRAM and raster, both of which the 4070 delivers.
The BAV mid-tier gaming build
Our current mid-tier gaming tower is built around exactly this brief: a modern eight core CPU, 32GB of dual channel DDR5, a 4060 or 4070 depending on tier, and an NVMe SSD large enough to hold the game and its mod folder without juggling installs. Case, PSU and cooling are chosen for quiet operation because Baldurs Gate 3 is a long sitting game and coil whine at hour six is genuinely miserable.

The listing runs through several variations. At the entry point you are looking at a Ryzen or Core i5 pairing with the 4060 and 16GB of RAM, which will hold 1080p High at a locked 60fps through the entire campaign. Step up through the variations and you get 32GB of RAM, a larger NVMe, and the 4070 for 1440p at 90fps and up. Every variation ships with a genuine Windows 11 licence, and every unit is bench tested before dispatch.
What we would not recommend for BG3 in 2026
Two things to avoid.
First, do not buy a "gaming PC" built on an older DDR4 platform with a modern GPU strapped on. The Ryzen 5000 series on AM4 is still a fine chip family, but you will feel Act 3 in a way that a 7600 or 13400 buyer will not. The saving is real, the compromise is also real.
Second, do not pay for a 4080 or 4090 to play Baldurs Gate 3. It is genuinely not that kind of game. The engine is CPU bound before it is GPU bound, so you spend a great deal extra to hit the same framerate cap. Save that budget for a proper monitor, or hold it for a title that will actually use it.
Monitor and peripherals
A 27 inch 1440p 144Hz IPS panel is the sweet spot in 2026. BG3 benefits from real screen space (there is a lot of UI) and from a fast refresh for the smooth panning through Baldurs Gate itself. G Sync or FreeSync Premium is worth having because framerate does swing across acts. Anything more exotic, ultrawide, OLED, 4K, is nice, but not necessary.
For peripherals, mouse and keyboard is the default. Baldurs Gate 3 does support controller and it is well implemented, but the inventory management alone makes a mouse the correct call for a long campaign.
Frequently asked questions
What framerate should I actually expect in Act 3?
On the mid-tier BAV build with the 4070 at 1440p High and DLSS Quality, expect 70 to 90fps across most of Lower City, dipping into the 60s during the biggest crowd scenes. On the 4060 variant at 1080p High, expect a locked 60fps with the same DLSS setting. These are our own bench numbers, not manufacturer claims.
Do I need 32GB of system RAM?
For a stock, unmodded playthrough, 16GB is enough at 1080p. For 1440p, or for a modded run using outfit packs and community expansions, 32GB removes the swap file stutter you get in later acts. Given DDR5 pricing in 2026, the upgrade cost is modest and worth taking on the mid-tier and above.
Will an RTX 3060 12GB still do the job?
Yes, at 1080p High with DLSS Quality, comfortably. The 3060 12GB remains a defensible choice on the second hand market and we do build with it on request. The 4060 wins on power efficiency and frame generation support, but on pure BG3 performance the two are closer than the model numbers suggest.
What about the Steam Deck or a handheld?
Baldurs Gate 3 is Steam Deck verified and runs well at 30fps on the medium preset. It is not the ideal way to experience the game (text is small, combat encounters are long) but it is genuinely playable. For a primary machine, a desktop is still the correct call.
